From Little Things Big Things Grow

Our new fabrics are here! Introducing our new prints Grand Fanflower and Grand Hearts by Umbrella Prints. Whilst our customers are familiar with our Hearts and Fanflower textile prints (a perennial) we liked the idea of making them LARGE, we were told it couldn't work, but Carly and I made the potentially disastrous decision to do it anyway and to see what happened.

The effect is amazing and exciting for us because it creates a completely different tension and reading of the 'same' elements.......making new from familiar.

The drape of the fabric, beautiful curved on your body, leads these textiles to feel like more of an embrace than a kiss.

A Koi- Sukasah Syahdan

To recall nothing past
And expect nothing yet to pass
To never suffer from boredom
Or give in to fiefdom
To need not be brave nor coy
Sometimes, I wish I was a koi.

Cute x

love Cloth

Julie Paterson of Cloth and Kate from Little Bird (website soon) dropped by Nest Studio on Friday which was massively awwwesome. Julie's fabric inspired me to study textile design there is no doubt and has forged the way for many a printed textile designer in Australia. I owe her and told her so; she really liked our patchwork fabric and the sheer quality of our hemp cotton base cloth (Julie also works with hemp).

Now Kate stocks a huge array of her beautiful work in Little Bird, Port Elliot where you can also find other yum Aussie textile designers (and new work by Umbrella Prints).

colour my fix

Saturated blocks of emotion oh how I have loved you and your colours Rothko

little bits

I have things around the place that aren't beautiful, aren't being used yet catch you eye all the time but that I just cant let go because they might be useful one day or be a part of something important but you don't know what. The key opens what? Half a note! One piece of a jigsaw yaaaah!

These objects are at once objects of irritation but also of amusement when put into a collective. On their own quite useless and yet holding a latent power all of their own whilst steadily gathering more dust. Solution! One big box for them all labeled 'bits' that along with power cords and connections and a handle from a teacup can go straight to the bin. Why didn't I do this earlier!

lady...and birds

I don't really talk about my brooches that much or do I? I have been making them for about three years now and occasionally bring out a new shape....now everything seems to be laser cut (still loving it nevertheless) but I knew when I began that if I was going to beat the 'machine' I would have to something to my cut designs that no machine can do... so I started to draw on them and make every single one unique and special.

Earlier this year I was booked to exhibit at A Room of Her Own for SALA (South Australian Living Artists festival) but Ellie and Gloria, after much consideration, have decided to close their gallery :-( which renders Queen Street without a gallery and me without a venue. Luckily the work I had started for that show will now be exhibited at the new Nest Studio for SALA.

I have made these little birds which will also be on the walls of Nest Studio. I meant for them to be a surprise except the trays of them have been discovered and outed recently by some of the mums visiting the art classes-so be it!

Here are a few photographs. I think I will call them 'wishing birds' as they each carry a gift or a posy of wishes, ribbons, flowers and leaves. They are very simply added to sit about .5 cm out from a wall individually or in a group and create a lovely shadow. If you would like one please email me or come to the Nest Studio opening 6th August 6pm 147 Magill Road, Stepney, South Australia, everyone is invited x
